Chain Block vs Lever Block: What's the Difference and When to Use Each in Singapore

Walk into any Singapore construction site, shipyard, or industrial facility and you will find both chain blocks and lever blocks in use. From the outside, both look like they do the same job — they are manual hoists that lift, lower, and tension loads using mechanical advantage. Both are compact, portable, and do not need electricity or hydraulics to operate.
But chain blocks and lever blocks are not interchangeable. They are designed for different applications, operated differently, and suit different working conditions. Choosing the wrong one for your job is at best inconvenient and at worst a serious safety risk.
This guide explains exactly what each hoist is, how they differ, when to use each one, and what Singapore's MOM regulations require for both.
What Is a Chain Block?

A chain block — also called a chain hoist or manual chain hoist — is a manual lifting device that uses a hand chain to drive an internal gear mechanism, which in turn raises and lowers a load chain with a hook attached.
How it works: The operator pulls the hand chain in one direction to lift the load, and in the opposite direction to lower it. An internal pawl and ratchet mechanism holds the load securely whenever the operator stops pulling. The load chain hangs vertically beneath the hoist body.
Key characteristics:
Designed for vertical lifting — the load chain must hang straight down
The load is suspended from an overhead anchor point — a beam, gantry, or lifting point above the load
Hand chain can be pulled in any direction around the hoist — the operator does not need to stand directly below
Available in a wide range of capacities — from 500kg to 50 tonnes and beyond
Compact and relatively lightweight for its rated capacity
The load remains securely held at any position without operator effort

What Is a Lever Block?

A lever block — also called a lever hoist, come-along, or ratchet lever hoist — uses a short lever handle operated with a pumping action to drive an internal ratchet mechanism, raising and lowering the load chain.
How it works: The operator pumps the lever handle back and forth to raise or lower the load. A directional selector switch or separate release lever changes between raise, lower, and neutral positions. The load is held securely by an internal pawl whenever the lever is not being operated.
Key characteristics:
Designed for use at any angle — vertical, horizontal, and any angle in between
Can be used to pull, tension, or position a load as well as lift it
The lever must be operated with a pumping action — suited to restricted spaces where a full hand-chain pull is not possible
Shorter load chain than a chain block — designed for shorter travel distances
Available in smaller capacity range than chain blocks — most common from 500kg to 15 tonnes
The compact lever handle suits confined spaces and awkward rigging positions

When to Use a Chain Block
A chain block is the right choice when:
You are lifting a load vertically from an overhead point
This is the chain block's core application. If you have an overhead beam, gantry crane, monorail, or lifting point directly above your load and you need to raise it vertically — a chain block is fast, efficient, and easy to operate.
Common examples in Singapore:
Lifting engines, gearboxes, and machinery in workshops
Raising materials through floor openings on construction sites
Lifting equipment for maintenance on overhead structures
Suspending loads during assembly or installation
Lifting steel fabrications in fabrication yards
You need a long lift height
Chain blocks are available with extended load chains and can be paired with additional chain to achieve lift heights well beyond the standard 3 metres. For tall structures, multi-storey lifts through openings, or any application requiring significant vertical travel, a chain block is the practical choice.
You need high capacity in a manageable package
Chain blocks are available in capacities up to 50 tonnes and beyond in standard industrial configurations. For very heavy lifts that still need to be manually operated — such as large motor changes, heavy machinery installation, or secondary rigging on crane lifts — a high-capacity chain block provides controllable, reliable lifting.
Multiple operators need to share the lift
On a chain block, the hand chain can be pulled by more than one person and from almost any position around the hoist. For heavy lifts where two operators sharing the pulling effort is practical, a chain block suits this better than a lever block.
When to Use a Lever Block
A lever block is the right choice when:
You need to pull horizontally or at an angle
This is the lever block's defining advantage. Unlike a chain block — which must be used vertically — a lever block can be used at any angle. Horizontal pulling, diagonal tensioning, and angled positioning are all within a lever block's design envelope.
Common horizontal and angled applications in Singapore:
Pulling structural steel members into alignment during erection
Tensioning lashing chains on cargo or transport loads
Pulling pipe sections together for flanged connections
Skidding heavy equipment horizontally on rollers
Tensioning guy wires and bracing
Rigging and positioning loads in shipyards where overhead anchor points are not always available
You are working in a confined space
The lever block's compact lever handle — typically 300–400mm long — can be operated in spaces where there is no room to pull a hand chain. In engine rooms, void spaces, cable trenches, plant rooms, and any tight working environment, the lever block's short pumping action is far more practical.
You need precise load positioning
The pumping action of a lever block moves the load in very small increments with each lever stroke — giving the operator much finer control over load position than a chain block's continuous chain pull. For aligning flanges, positioning heavy components onto mounting bolts, or any application requiring millimetre-level precision, a lever block is the better tool.
You need to tension a chain or lashing
Lever blocks are widely used on Singapore worksites and in logistics operations for tensioning — applying a sustained pulling force to chains, cables, or lashings rather than lifting a suspended load. Chain blocks are not designed for this application.
The lift distance is short
Lever blocks typically have a standard load chain of 1.5 metres — shorter than a chain block. For applications where you only need 500mm to 1,500mm of travel, a lever block is compact and efficient. For longer travel distances, a chain block is more practical.
Using Chain Blocks and Lever Blocks Together
In practice, chain blocks and lever blocks are often used together on the same lift — each doing what it does best.
A common rigging scenario in Singapore shipyards and construction sites:
Lever blocks are used horizontally to drag heavy equipment into position — skidding it across a floor or pulling it through a doorway
Once in position, chain blocks suspended from overhead points take the load vertically for final installation
Another common combination:
Chain blocks perform the primary vertical lift — raising the load from ground level to installation height
Lever blocks are used to fine-tune the final position — pulling the load horizontally or at an angle into exact alignment before bolting down
Understanding that these two tools complement each other — rather than compete — is the mark of an experienced rigger.
SWL, Angle Factors and Safe Use
Never Exceed the SWL
Both chain blocks and lever blocks are rated with a Safe Working Load (SWL) — the maximum load they are designed to lift under normal conditions. Never exceed the SWL. If you are not sure of the load weight, weigh it or obtain the weight from engineering drawings — never estimate.
Chain Block: Vertical Use Only
A chain block must only be used in a vertical orientation — the load chain hanging straight down. Using a chain block at an angle puts side loads on the internal mechanism that it is not designed to handle, risking mechanism damage and load drop.
If you need to lift at an angle — use a lever block.
Lever Block: Apply the Angle Factor for Multi-Block Rigs
When lever blocks are used in multi-block configurations — for example, two lever blocks pulling from different directions to position a single load — the angle between the pulling directions affects the load on each block. Never Use the Load Chain as a Sling
The load chain of a chain block or lever block is not a lifting sling. Never wrap the load chain around a load and hook it back onto itself as a makeshift sling — this damages the chain and creates an unrated rigging configuration. Always use a proper lifting sling to connect the load to the hook.
Always Use the Safety Latch
Both chain block and lever block hooks must have a functional safety latch. Before every lift, confirm the safety latch closes fully and springs back when released. A hook with a damaged or missing safety latch must not be used.
MOM Compliance: What Is Required for Chain Blocks and Lever Blocks in Singapore
Under Singapore's WSH (Lifting Operations) Regulations and SS 569, chain blocks and lever blocks are classified as lifting appliances and are subject to the following requirements:
Before First Use
Proof load tested to a minimum of 1.5× SWL
Test certificate issued by the manufacturer or an accredited testing body
Identification marking showing SWL and serial number
In Service
Pre-use inspection before every lift — operator checks:
Hook and safety latch condition
Load chain for wear, stretch, twisted or damaged links
Hand chain / lever for damage
Housing for cracks, deformation, or damage
Brake and pawl mechanism — load must hold securely with no drift when operator stops
Formal inspection by a Competent Person at intervals not exceeding 12 months
Inspection records maintained and available for MOM inspection

Retire Immediately If:
Any chain link is cracked, bent, worn by more than 10% of original diameter, or elongated by more than 5%
Hook is cracked, bent, or twisted
Safety latch is missing or non-functional
Brake mechanism does not hold the load securely
Housing is cracked or deformed
Overload limiter (if fitted) has been triggered
The hoist has been involved in a shock load event
Load Testing After Repair
Any chain block or lever block that has been repaired — including chain replacement, hook replacement, or internal mechanism work — must be re-proof load tested to 1.5× SWL before being returned to service.
Choosing the Right Capacity
When selecting a chain block or lever block, do not choose the minimum capacity that covers your load. Apply a working margin:
Rule of thumb for Singapore worksites:
Select a hoist with an SWL of at least 125–150% of your maximum expected load
This margin accounts for dynamic effects during lifting, slight load weight variations, and the real-world condition of the equipment over time
Example: If your heaviest expected load is 2,000kg, select a 3-tonne chain block or lever block — not a 2-tonne unit.
